Free activities at Father’s Day fishing event

NANAIMO – Families are able to fish without a licence during Father's Day Sunday (June 15).

Families can spend some quality time together outdoors this weekend (June 13-15) during the 15th annual Family Fishing Weekend.

In addition to more than a dozen events taking place throughout Vancouver Island, families are able to fish without a licence, giving one option to enjoy Father’s Day weekend outdoors.

Hosted by The Family Fishing Society of B.C. and volunteer-led community groups, Family Fishing Weekend events feature hands-on help for beginners, fish identification and habitat conservation information and the fun of fishing and catching fish. Loner rods, reels and tackle are provided for those who do not have their own gear.

In Nanaimo, Family Fishing Day is set for Saturday (June 15) at Westwood Lake, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Among the crafts, games and other activities planned will be demonstrations by Nanaimo Search and Rescue at noon, trout release at 1 p.m., and fly tying demos by Island Water Fly Fishers all day.

Family Fishing Weekend is an annual opportunity to fish B.C.’s lakes, rivers, streams and tidal waters for free. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is also offering free saltwater fishing over Fathers’ Day weekend. For more information and regulation details, please visit or
