The Regional District of Nanaimo board expressed its sadness regarding the passing of director Clarke Gourlay in a mountaineering accident in Strathcona Park over the Canada Day long weekend.
“The RDN is deeply saddened by the loss of such a vibrant and engaged member of our community and of our board,” said chairman Ian Thorpe in a press release. “We extend our sincere condolences to his family and know that his avid contributions to the region will continue to be felt by residents for years to come.”

Gourlay was the director of Electoral Area G, which covers the French Creek, San Pareil and Little Qualicum region. He also served on the electoral area services committee and the transit select committee, and chaired the regional parks and trails select committee and the Oceanside services committee.
Alternate director Joe Stanhope will take over Gourlay’s responsibilities until a byelection is held. Stanhope is a past RDN chairman.
