The first female mayor of Nanaimo’s celebration of life will be moved to Beban Park to accommodate the large number of people lining up to pay their respects.
Joy Leach was mayor of Nanaimo from 1990-93, as well as a longtime school trustee in Nanaimo school district. She died Aug. 25 at the age of 72. She defeated Frank Ney to win the mayor’s seat for one term and is the only female mayor in the Harbour City’s history.
Mourners can pay their respects to Leach and her family on Friday (Sept. 12), 3:30 p.m., at Beban Park Social Centre.
