Firefighters put out a fire that caused major damage to a house in north Nanaimo this week.

Crews were called out just before 3:30 p.m. to a fire in the 5100 block of Broughton Place near Rutherford Road on Friday, Oct. 14, and arrived on scene to find the house ablaze. The back of the house sustained the worst of the fire damage.

Emergency personnel on scene said there were no patients requiring treatment.

“We responded to find heavy fire conditions…” said Jodi Le Masurier, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief. “Luckily the firefighters that responded to the scene got the fire under control quite quickly which prevented the incident from escalating. There was extensive damage to the house.”

She said four residents were displaced. Two were home at the time but were able to get out of the house safely.

Le Masurier noted that it’s Fire Prevention Week and worth offering reminders that fire won’t wait and people should plan their escape.

“Plan your escape route, test your smoke alarms, in this case I would also say choose an outside meeting place is one of the pertinent [points], and practise your home fire drill,” she said.
