Fire sends one man to hospital

NANAIMO – One man treated in hospital for smoke inhalation from basement fire.

One man was treated in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the basement of his home.

The blaze broke out about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in a home at 144 Acacia Ave. in central Nanaimo.

Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer investigating the fire Wednesday morning, said fire damage was contained to one room and its contents, but there was smoke damage throughout the residence.

Kwasnecha was in the initial stages of his investigation and had not determined the cause of the fire.

“The occupant was taken to hospital last night for smoke inhalation and was released sometime this morning,” Kwasnecha said.

The man was the sole occupant of the home.
