Fire rips through Fifth Street home

NANAIMO – Blaze in attic causes heavy damage to home in south Nanaimo.

Firefighters battled a blaze that caused extensive damage to a house in Harewood Tuesday.

Crews responded to the fire shortly before 4 p.m. and battled the flames for nearly one hour before they were fully doused.

Personnel at the scene said the fire appeared to have started in the attic of the single storey house at 82 Fifth St. and crews had to tear down the ceilings in the interior of the home to root out all the hots spot. The male occupant of the residence was not home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Services coordinator, said the man was given 72 hours assistance, which included a motel room, and was able to salvage some of his clothes and other personal items from the house.

The cause of the fire was not determined before press time Wednesday.
