Fire officials concerned about set fires

NANAIMO – Fire officials are concerned about a spate of set fires in the Third Street area Tuesday.

Fire officials are concerned about a spate of set fires in the Third Street area Tuesday.

Ennis Mond, fire investigator with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said two dumpsters were set ablaze around 5 a.m., one at Serauxmen Stadium and one at Nanaimo Ice Centre. Fire officials learned Wednesday morning that a port-o-potty on nearby Sarum Rise Way had also been lit on fire the day before and investigators suspect that fire happened around the same time as the other two.

None of the fires resulted in any serious damage, said Mond, but the pattern is disturbing because past history indicates it is often the same person or group responsible in cases like this and the arson acts could continue.

He also wants to remind people to call 911 if they see a fire or any suspicious behaviour.
