Fire ban remains for south Island

NANAIMO – The prohibition on Category 2 and 3 open fires remains in the Coastal Fire Centre south of Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island

A campfire ban remains in effect for the mid-Island area, despite some fires now allowed north of Courtenay.

The prohibition on Category 2 and 3 open fires remains in the Coastal Fire Centre south of Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island. The prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Further restrictions are in place on fires within the City of Nanaimo. Please contact Nanaimo Fire Rescue for more information.

Violating a fire ban comes with a fine of $345, or if convicted in court the fine tops $100,000 with up to one year in jail.

If the fire contributes to a wildfire, the person might be subject to another $10,000 fine and ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
