Fillmore sets sights on city council seat

With Monday’s federal vote behind him, Brian Fillmore’s sights are already set on his next opportunity to run for public office.

With Monday’s federal vote behind him, Brian Fillmore’s sights are already set on his next opportunity to run for public office.

Fillmore garnered just more than 3,000 votes as the Nanaimo-Cowichan Liberal candidate to finish a distant fourth, but admitted Tuesday he knew going in he didn’t stand much chance.

“I’m not that surprised,” Fillmore said. “I didn’t have a lot of time and my main purpose was to get more experience with public forums and debating.”

Fillmore, who finished second to Ted Greves in the City of Nanaimo byelection earlier this spring, said his sights were set on city council all along.

“That’s the whole reason I went through this. My heart is to get on city council,” he said, adding he couldn’t pass up the “fluke opportunity” presented by the Liberals, who were without a candidate as the campaign began.

With civic elections taking place across B.C. in November, Fillmore is a safe bet to be on the ballot in Nanaimo, although he says that decision will ultimately be determined by his employer.

“It’s definitely where my heart is,” he said.
