Court records got a little damp but weren’t damaged after a pipe burst and water leaked into the courthouse in Nanaimo yesterday.

Shelly Burchnall, Nanaimo court senior manager, said there was no significant damage after the pipe burst around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“One of the drainage pipes above the criminal court registry leaked and … technically it’s a sewer pipe, one that would go out to the main stack, it was not a main stack, and what came out of it was tap water, so the fact is that it sounded a lot worse than what it actually was…” said Burchnall.

“There was a file cabinet there and some water was splashing towards the file cabinet, but there were no criminal court files [damaged] … Some file jackets got a bit damp.”

Burchnall said two of her staff had water splash on them and were sent home to take a shower as a precaution.

“It was just a matter of checking with the public health nurse and disease control to make sure there wasn’t anything we had to do and we’re all good,” said Burchnall.

She said the pipes have been fixed.

“This building is a very old building,” said Burchnall. “It was built in 1957 and it’s the original plumbing that’s in the building.”
