Feedback sought on environmental issues

NANAIMO – The non-profit Island Roundtable on the Environment and Economy is searching for participants.

A new not-for-profit is looking to bring Islanders together to discuss issues ranging from sustainable development to climate change.

The Island Roundtable on the Environment and Economy launched on the 25th anniversary of national roundtable’s formation and is now searching for members to discuss  and help solve Island-wide issues.

The group is aimed at bringing together lobby groups, academics, politicians and residents at one table where they can share knowledge, network and work on solutions for economy, environment and social interests.

Founder and society president Laurie Gourlay said the first task will be to address sustainable development.

“Vancouver Island has unique challenges,” he said. “As climate change impacts come to the forefront, along with water and food security issues and an increasing Island population of some 765,000 residents, important decisions about sustainable development and stewardship will be required.”

The work of the society will follow a process and mandate outlined by the B.C. Roundtable on the Environment and Economy in 1994. For more information, please contact Gourlay at 250-722-3444, or thistle@shaw.ca.
