A motorist crashed into a utility pole in Nanaimo this morning and power is now out in the area.

Emergency crews were called out just before noon on Thursday, Jan. 26, after a crossover utility vehicle collided with the pole, then a rock along East Wellington Road near Westwood Road.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle without assistance, but has since been transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be checked over.

A hydro pole was sheared in the crash, lines are down, and that section of East Wellington Road is expected to be closed for hours, said crews on scene.

According to ICBC data, there were three crashes at the East Wellington Road-Westwood Road intersection in 2021 and six crashes there during the five-year period from 2017-2021.
