Drug arrests allegedly tied to Red Scorpions gang

NANAIMO – Police arrest alleged Red Scorpions member and snatch cash, coke and meth in raid on weekend.

Mounties bagged drugs, cash and five suspects with ties to the Red Scorpions on the weekend when the RCMP’s General Investigation and Criminal Intelligence units targeted street to mid-level drug dealers in Nanaimo.

The arrests included one suspect alleged to be an active member of the organized crime group.

Four of the five were arrested during vehicle stops on Nottingham Drive Sunday at about 5 p.m. while the fifth person was arrested in his vehicle on Hammond Bay Road.

A search of their vehicles turned up $60,0000 in Canadian currency, more than 280 grams of crack cocaine and 57 grams of heroin.

Those seizures, plus intelligence gathered weeks prior to the arrests, led to the search of a home Monday in the 400 block of Nottingham Drive where police grabbed another $6,000 in Canadian cash, plus 42 grams of crystal meth and cocaine.

“No further arrests are expected and our investigators believe these arrests and seizure of cash and drugs will have a significant impact on the sale and distribution of drugs in the Nanaimo area”, said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

The five suspects, age 21 to 27, were held in custody overnight and released the next day to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Jan. 24 to face recommended charges of one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
