A driver lost control, clipped an excavator and rolled a vehicle in Nanaimo’s north end this morning.

Emergency crews were called to Ambience Drive at Laguna Way a little after 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3.

Crews on scene said the two occupants had been able to get out of the vehicle themselves by the time first responders arrived at the crash scene.

The 21-year-old female passenger was uninjured and the 19-year-old male driver was looked over by paramedics at the scene.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said witnesses told police the Hyundai was travelling northbound at a high rate of speed, failed to negotiate a corner and hit a curb before it collided with an excavator and flipped on its roof. The car came to rest between the excavator and a concrete retaining wall.

The driver and passenger stayed at the scene and co-operated with police.

“They were both a little shook up. They didn’t require medical treatment,” O’Brien said. “The driver displayed symptoms of alcohol impairment.”

O’Brien said the driver gave a breath sample, which resulted in a fail reading on a roadside screening device and was given an immediate 90-day driving prohibition and the car was towed from the scene.

“This is very troubling,” O’Brien said. “First of all, it’s in a residential area at a high rate of speed. Secondly, it’s at 10:30 in the morning where the driver is showing symptoms of alcohol impairment and at a relatively young age … Contributing factors were obviously the alcohol and the high rate of speed.”

The incident remains under police investigation.
