Downtown celebrates national contest win

Out of thousands of entries, Nanaimo's Commercial Street was recently voted the "Greatest Street in Canada" and the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association is celebrating with a street party Sunday (June 19).

People can visit Commercial Street between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to check out live entertainment with the Naked Grapes and the Doug Thring Band, as well as street performers from Vesta Fire Entertainment.

There will also be a bouncy castle, burgers and hot dogs from an outdoor kitchen supplied by Sunray Heating, free admission to the Nanaimo Museum, live paintings and merchant specials.

Commercial Street earned the title during the Great Places in Canada Contest hosted by the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Hamilton's Ottawa Street finished second and Saskatoon's Broadway Avenue finished third in the Great Streets category.
