Dover Bay tops the Fraser Institute’s secondary school rankings for Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools, the latest report shows.

The Fraser Institute released its annual report card on secondary schools today, which is based on student results from annual provincewide exams, grade-to-grade transition rates and graduation rates.

Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies for the institute, says the report is not an indicator that will tell parents what the best school is for their child, because no one at the institute knows those parents’ children, but it answers the question, in general and as reflected by data, of how the school is doing academically compared to others in the report.

Parents use the report to choose a school where they have an opportunity to do so and it provides an annual audit of how the school is doing relative to its own history and other schools in its neighbourhood and across the province, he said.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation took to Twitter today in opposition of the rankings.

“Enough with the useless Fraser Institute rankings. Our #bced students and their hard work deserve better than click bait,” it wrote. “Have a question about a school? Talk to the staff that work there and the school’s community of parents. They know more than any standardized test.

Of 253 public and independent secondary schools in the 2016-17 report card, Dover Bay placed 109th and is the top ranked in Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools with a rating of 6.3 out of 10. It’s followed by NDSS, which placed 164th, Wellington Secondary at 192nd, Cedar 239th and John Barsby, 252nd.

Neither Aspengrove School nor Nanaimo Christian School, this city’s two independent schools, are included in the results as there was not enough data, according to the institute.
