The story of the boreal forest and the Indigenous Peoples who call it home is the subject of The Issue with Tissue: A Boreal Love Story showing at Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo campus next week.
Protecting the boreal forest is an existential imperative, yet it is now being clear-cut, noted a press release for the local screening.
The acclaimed documentary, shown at COP15 in Montreal, features renowned First Nations elders and leaders, scientists and conservationists, including Senator Michèle Audette, Innu First Nation; Dr. Suzanne Simard, author of Finding the Mother Tree; elder Dave Courchene, founder of the Turtle Lodge; Valérie Courtois, director of Indigenous Leadership Initiative; and Nigel Roulet, co-author of United Nations IPCC reports.
The film will be screened Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. in Room 109, Building 356, as part of Global Citizens Week at VIU. Admission is by donation at the door.
There will be a question-and-answer session afterward with the documentary’s director, filmmaker Michael Zelniker, and ethnobotanist and UVic professor emeritus Nancy Turner.
The showing is sponsored by the Mid-Island-Nanaimo chapter of the Council of Canadians, Nanaimo Climate Pledge and Vancouver Island University.
