Minor adjustments could be coming to the catchment areas for five Nanaimo elementary schools.
The changes would affect roughly 50 students at Coat Tyee, Pleasant Valley, Forest Park, Quarterway and Chase River elementary schools.
The rationale for the changes is due to the closure of Mount Benson elementary school, to support attendance patterns and family choices and clean up issues resulting from the construction of the Nanaimo Parkway, said Pete Sabo, Nanaimo school district's director of planning and operations.
"Part of this is the district catching up with what the reality is," said Sabo. "These are really just minor housekeeping things we're picking up."
Boundaries were never changed to reflect construction of the parkway and district staff want children on the same side of the highway as their school, he said.
Other changes would move small groups of students around Long Lake – sent to Coal Tyee following the closure of Mount Benson – to Rock City and Uplands Park, because most families in that area are already taking their children to those schools.
A public consultation on the proposed boundary changes will take place next fall and if approved, the changes will take effect in September 2012.
