Firefighters have made progress in containing and extinguishing a fire burning west of Nanaimo.

B.C. Wildfire Service fire crews have been battling a 10-hectare blaze at Rush Creek since Sunday. The fire is not classified as a wildfire of note posing a risk to public safety.

Dorothy Jakobsen, Coastal Fire Centre spokeswoman, said Wednesday morning that firefighters have made progress on the fire at Rush Creek and the fire is now classified as “being held.” The fire was still classified as “out of control” on Tuesday.

“Progress has been made,” she said. “It’s 50 per cent contained.”

Jakobsen said 25 firefighters are on site tackling the blaze, which is burning in bucked timber on private forestry land. She said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, but the wildfire service suspects it was human-caused.

The fire risk in the Coastal Fire Centre region is considered low to moderate in most areas and there is no campfire ban or forest use restrictions in effect.
