Council relaxes urban poultry limits

A one-year trial period to allow urban poultry in Nanaimo didn't ruffle many feathers, so city council amended the bylaw Monday to increase the number of birds urban homesteaders can keep on their property.

A one-year trial period to allow urban poultry in Nanaimo didn't ruffle many feathers, so city council amended the bylaw Monday to increase the number of birds urban homesteaders can keep on their property.

According to a city report, just two complaints were lodged about urban chickens over the course of the trial, both of which were easily resolved.

Previously, up to two ducks or chickens were allowed on properties less than 450 square metres (4,843.76 square feet), while four chickens or ducks were allowed on properties from that size to 0.4 hectares (one acre).

Under the new bylaw, poultry owners can now keep up to four ducks or chickens on the smaller property and up to six chickens or ducks the larger property category.

Roosters are not allowed under the bylaw.
