Coroner reports deaths of students struck on Parkway

NANAIMO - Both teens struck by an SUV on the weekend have died. Coroner has released the identity of one of the victims.

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of one of two exchange students who have died after they were struck by an SUV in Nanaimo on Friday.

Maria Hildebrandt Cereija, 15, of Mexico City, has been identified as one of the victims of the incident.

Cereija and a companion were crossing the Island Highway eastbound at Mostar Road at about 10:30 p.m. when they were hit by the SUV.

Cereija was rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital before being transferred to Victoria General Hospital where she died Monday afternoon.

Her companion, also an exchange student from Mexico, was transferred to B.C. Children’s Hospital, but also died of his injuries Monday.

His identity will not be made public until all of his family members have been notified of his death.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP are continuing their investigations into the deaths.
