Coroner identifies victim of fatal diving accident near Nanoose

NANAIMO - Alberta man identified as victim of recent fatal scuba-diving incident in Nanoose.

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a fatal scuba diving incident in the ocean near Nanoose, north of Nanaimo, on Wednesday.

He was Martin Keith Bishop, 52, of Edmonton, Alta.

According to the coroner, Bishop was visiting the mid-Island on a family vacation when he went on a scuba-diving expedition with a dive master and one other person. They entered the water near the intersection of Tyee Crescent and Blueback Road in Nanoose, a well-known diving spot.

Something went wrong during the dive and Bishop died at the scene.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate Bishop’s death, but Oceanside RCMP confirmed Monday that investigators had determined there was nothing of a criminal nature associated with the incident.
