Construction begins at Nanaimo's Colliery Dam Park

NANAIMO – Construction work on the lower Colliery dam, including tree removal, begins next week.

Remediation of the lower Colliery dam is about to begin.

Park users are being asked to follow detour signs as the city prepares to get underway with construction of an auxiliary spillway next week.

The public will see site clearing including tree removal, site preparation and temporary closure of the wood bridge crossing Harewood Creek beginning Sept. 14.

Signage will show when the lower Colliery dam trail network is closed and alternative routes.

Access to the middle dam will not change.

“The city is seeking the public’s cooperation as work begins on the construction of the auxiliary spillway,” said Toby Seward, the city’s acting general manager of community development and protective services. “Visitors to the park and park users are asked to watch for signs identifying detours or closed areas.

Copcan Civil Ltd. was chosen as the contractor to lead the project, which is budgeted at $4.2 million.
