The Council of Canadians is hosting a movement-building, two-day conference in Nanaimo beginning Friday (Oct. 26) that will see members from across the country gather to discuss mining and pipeline projects.
Called Making Waves, the conference will bring together environmental, health, youth, First Nation and labour groups to raise awareness about issues and projects that may negatively affect the environment.
Keynote speakers scheduled to appear include Maude Barlow, chairwoman of the Council of Canadians; Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs; Linda McQuaig, journalist and author; and Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org.
The public forum portion of the conference takes place from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on Oct. 26, followed by a conference at the Coast Bastion Inn Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.
