Community seminars demonstrate benefits of liquefied natural gas

NANAIMO – The B.C. government's regional liquefied natural gas community seminar tour is set to make a stop in Nanaimo Jan. 13-14.

The B.C. government's regional liquefied natural gas community seminar tour is set to make a stop in Nanaimo Jan. 13-14 at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

The two-day session will feature information on the natural gas industry, government regulations, opportunities coming out of the sector and environmental protection, with government and industry representatives holding panel discussions and answering questions.

Science World, the non-profit science education organization, will be participating in the two-day event, and Bryan Tisdall, president and CEO of Science World B.C., said the seminars are multi-dimensional and focus on secondary school students' skills development and career opportunities.

Tisdall said his organization will be providing basic information on the science of energy as a backdrop to other elements.

“The other thing that [Science World is] focused on is not only developing some greater understanding of the basic science of energy, but giving folks the confidence to ask questions ... What questions should I be asking about the impact [developments] might have on our community?” said Tisdall.

Representatives from the Ministry of Natural Gas Development weren't able to comment by press time but did say in an e-mail that appropriate environmental reviews and approvals must be met for all industrial proposals in B.C., including those linked to liquefied natural gas.

The environmental assessment process involves a review of all anticipated land, water and air impacts from proposed development. Public, stakeholders and First Nations are all able to comment on these matters as well as the cumulative nature of development. Proponents must address or respond to any issues raised, the ministry said.

Registration for the event is encouraged but not required.
