National Aboriginal Day was celebrated Wednesday in Nanaimo both on Saysutshun – Newcastle Island – and at Maffeo Sutton Park downtown.
Alex Wells, three-time world champion hoop dancer of the Lil’wat Nation, Mount Currie, B.C., was one of the top billed performers at Maffeo Sutton Park for National Aboriginal Day celebrations. Local artists, including Jackson Robertson of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, also displayed their work at the park.
