Community members in Nanaimo held a vigil for peace in Ukraine.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom organized a gathering Sunday, March 20, in Diana Krall Plaza. About 50 people attended and there were a few remarks, two minutes of silence, and then a march and rally at the intersection of Terminal Avenue and Commercial Street.

Dyane Brown, spokesperson for the women’s league, said her group calls for an immediate ceasefire and serious negotiations – involving women – to bring an end to the war.

Lisa Marie Barron, Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP, said she attended to stand in solidarity as a member of Parliament “to be able to do all that we can to promote peace in Ukraine, to give Ukrainians what they’re asking for, which is peace for their families, peace for themselves.”

Sheila Malcolmson, Nanaimo MLA, also attended the vigil and rally and said she’s grateful for the community members who are “standing up and making us see beyond just our own borders.”
