Collision with pickup hospitalizes motorcyclist

NANAIMO – Motorcyclist seriously injured after colliding with pickup on Uplands Drive.

A motorcyclist is in hospital with multiple injuries after she collided with a pickup truck Thursday.

The crash happened at about 2:45 p.m. on Uplands Drive near the Turner Road intersection at Longwood Station when a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by a woman, 22, hit a 2014 GMC Sierra pickup.

"She's in very bad shape, but she's stable," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. "She had numerous broken bones, the most significant being a fractured femur."

Witnesses told police the pickup, occupied by a man and a woman, was turning left out form the mall when they were broadsided by the southbound motorcycle.

The occupants of the pickup suffered no physical injuries, but were traumatized by the incident.

North- and southbound lanes where closed on Uplands Drive for about two hours as police rerouted traffic to conduct their investigation.

Speed likely contributed to the accident, O'Brien said.

The investigation is ongoing and police have not determined what charges might be laid against either driver.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, but has not spoke with investigators, please call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-245-9970.
