The City of Nanaimo will add to its management team after selecting its first communications manager.

The City of Nanaimo will add to its management team after selecting its first communications manager.

The city's hiring committee chose Philip Cooper for the position.

Cooper has been the director of communication with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo since 2006, where he was credited with turning around the negative media coverage of the city by spearheading projects like Big Spirit and Faces of Fort McMurray, both designed to highlight positive aspects of the community.

Cooper holds an honours bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Western Ontario and a master's in applied communications from Royal Roads. He supplemented his degrees with a graduate certificate in project management and a post diploma in corporate communication.

Doug Holmes, Nanaimo's assistant city manager, said the city received local applications for the position as well as applications from across B.C. and five provinces and territories.

Cooper is expected to begin his new duties in early September.
