City says too late to mail in tax payments

Nanaimo city council advises residents to use alternatives for property tax payments and Home Owner Grant applications.

It’s too late to mail property tax payments and Home Owner Grant applications, with a possible Canada Post strike in early-July, according to the City of Nanaimo.

Nanaimo residents have to send property tax payments and grant applications by a July 4 deadline or face penalties.

The city is now advising it’s too late to use the post, due to a possible Canada Post strike that could start July 2.

“Please use the other options that are available to ensure that your payment and grant application is received by our office by the July 4 due date to avoid penalties,” said Diane Hiscock, city manager of revenue services.

Among the options people have are to make payments through their Internet banking site, using the 24-hour drop box at 411 Dunsmuir Street or by visiting the city Service and Resource Centre, a press release shows. Payments are also accepted at most financial institutions.

Home Owner Grants can be claimed online at www.nanaimo.ca, by using the drop box or visiting the Service and Resource Centre.  Post marks are not accepted as a date of payment.
