Nanaimo’s parks and rec department is creating another Winter Wonderland public skating event over the holiday season.
Beban Park’s Frank Crane Arena will be transformed so skaters will feel like they’re in a giant snow globe with twinkling lights, seasonal music, a 30-foot-tall Christmas tree and other holiday decor. Activities happen Dec. 24 and Dec. 26-30 and skating sessions will be free with no charge for helmet or skate rentals.
Families can also start the day off with a Kinsmen pancake breakfast Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at Beban Park Social Centre.
The annual Winter Wonderland event takes place thanks to partnerships between the City of Nanaimo and local businesses and is a way to say thank you to the community and give everyone, regardless of age, skating ability or economic circumstances, an opportunity to enjoy skating, noted a city press release. The city is still looking for some additional sponsors for the week; for information, contact the arenas department at 250-756-5200.

“Winter Wonderland is a Nanaimo tradition,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog, in the press release. “For six days each year, the Frank Crane Arena is transformed into a winter theme with an abundance of participation.”
