City opens applications for sport, culture grants

NANAIMO: Three grants are available to local non-profit organizations.

The City of Nanaimo is now accepting applications from community organizations needing financial assistance to support their cultural or sport organization or events.

Three grants are available to local non-profit organizations: cultural operating grant; arts, cultural and festivals events grant; and the sport tournament grant.

The grants highlight the contribution arts, cultural and sport activities bring to the community.

“The economic and social benefit generated by our local organizations is impressive,” said Bob Kuhn, manager of recreation and cultural services.

“To these ends, the City of Nanaimo is committed to encouraging and supporting an active and successful art, culture and sport sector within the community.”

Cultural operating grants are available to non-profit arts and cultural organizations to assist with operating costs. Seed money is also available to new and emerging organizations.

Eligibility and evaluation guidelines are included on the application form which can be found online at www.nanaimo.ca.

Applications must be received by Nov. 1. The cultural committee of the parks, recreation and culture commission will be reviewing the applications before the end of 2012.

There are two deadlines for the sports tournament grant application: Nov. 1 for events hosted Jan. 1 to June 30, and May 1 for events hosted between July 1 and Dec. 31.

Sport tournament grant applications will be reviewed by the recreation committee. Application forms for this grant are also available at www.nanaimo.ca.

Committee recommendations are forwarded to the commission and city council for final approval.
