City of Nanaimo is asking its residents to recycle the right stuff to reduce contamination in recycling carts.

The city said in a press release that it is teaming with Leadership Vancouver Island for the #RecycleRight challenge encouraging people in Nanaimo to recycle properly. While communities across B.C. are facing high contamination rates due to misplaced items in curbside recycling carts, the city seeks to reduce Nanaimo’s rates and is asking residents to help.

“The #RecycleRight campaign is a call to action, and over the next two weeks we invite you to help raise awareness for a chance to win some great prizes,” the city said in the press release.

Decreasing contamination rates can prevent increased service fees and recyclable items from going into the landfill, where they don’t belong.

People can participate by sharing video or pictures on social media with the hashtag #RecycleRight or tag the City of Nanaimo on Facebook or Instagram with #RecycleRight and #NanaimoRecycles. They can also download the Nanaimo Recycles app and use the ‘What Goes Where’ tool.

Leadership Vancouver Island is a community-focused leadership development program.
