Residents can share their vision for 97 hectares of city-owned land near Colliery Dam Park during an open house Saturday (Dec. 3).
The city will host an open house on the Greater Nanaimo Water District Lands on Nanaimo Lakes Road, where residents will learn about the property, current uses, as well as development challenges and planning policy, a press release shows.
People will also have the chance to offer input into the future use of the civic properties as part of a city review of the lands and meet property stakeholders.
“Our first open house will provide a chance for the public to learn more about the historical uses and special features of these public lands and we hope this will help encourage residents to provide their input into how we use these lands for years to come,” said Rob Lawrance, city parks and open space planner.
There will be guided walks by biologists, who were involved in an assessment of the property, and demonstrations by stakeholder groups, such as Vancouver Island University, Nanaimo Fish and Game Club and Nanaimo Search and Rescue.
The event will be held in the parks operations annex building at 1151 Nanaimo Lakes Rd. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Parking is beside the compound and also available along Harewood Mines Road.
It will be the first of two open houses, with the second happening in January.
