The City of Nanaimo has temporarily suspended collection of garbage, recycling and kitchen waste due to the high risk of injury from ice and snow conditions.

Residents are asked to bring in their garbage, recycling and kitchen waste for the time being. All curbside collection services will resume as soon as conditions improve.

According to a press release from the city, Public Works is currently receiving high call volumes and is asking residents to only make a call if the matter is urgent.

"We have stopped refuse collection today because we found that working in accumulated snow and ice on the shoulders of roadways is unsafe," said Charlotte Davis, manager of sanitation, recycling and public works administration. "A number of refuse collectors have been injured. The sanitation crew has been redeployed to work on snow and ice removal from areas including bus stops, steps and bridges."
