City of Nanaimo names committee leaders

NANAIMO – Committee membership was announced Monday, assigning councillors to groups.

New faces are at the helm of city committees.

The City of Nanaimo announced committee membership Monday, including which councillors will chair the different groups.

Committees were restructured last year, five months after the city temporarily suspended eight committees and commissions to make way for its core services reviews and as city staff reviewed a governance report.

City council appointments were announced in August and new terms of reference for the groups were established. The city put out a call for memberships in December, and Sheila Gurrie, acting city clerk, said committees weren’t running until council appointed the new membership, which they did in camera on Feb. 20.

Coun. Bill Bestwick will helm the parks, recreation and wellness committee and remains chairman of the finance and audit committee. Coun. Ian Thorpe is now the chairman of the public safety committee, while Coun. Jim Kipp is chairman of community planning and development committee. Coun. Jerry Hong is chairman of the public works and engineering committee and Coun. Gord Fuller will head the community vitality committee.

The Design Advisory Panel chairman Kevin Krastel had already been appointed and Nanaimo Youth Advisory Council selects its own chairman or chairwoman.
