A windstorm that’s knocking down trees around the outskirts of Nanaimo has prompted the City of Nanaimo to close all city parks.
The city issued an advisory at mid-day Wednesday, May 18, that it is closing all its parks for the day “due to the current and forecast high winds.”
Members of the public are advised to “stay away from all treed areas while high winds persist.” Any downed trees should be reported to the city at 250-755-7515.
The Nanaimo Aquatic Centre is also closed due to a power outage.

Environment Canada re-issued a wind warning this morning for the east coast of Vancouver Island, saying “very strong” southwesterly winds gusting from 70-90 kilometres per hour were expected to continue through to the evening.
