Construction for Nanaimo’s Midtown Water Supply Project is set to start next week.
The first stage of construction will happen along the Nanaimo Parkway, between Northfield and East Wellington roads, and along Northfield Road between the Nanaimo Parkway and Boxwood Road. Work is slated to get underway Monday, July 25, according to a City of Nanaimo press release.
The multi-year project involves construction of two large water supply mains that will provide essential water supply to central and north Nanaimo and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and strengthen the city’s water supply to accommodate future growth and provide fire protection for decades to come. The system will also provide NRGH with a dedicated potable water and fire protection feed.

The project consists of major pipeline trenching along Bowen and East Wellington roads, the Nanaimo Parkway, Northfield and Boxwood roads and through Beban Park to Labieux Road. The public is asked to obey all safety warning signs and stay out of cordoned-off areas.
The project was given priority after a water main broke under Bowen Road in April 2020, which interrupted water supply to the hospital and jeopardized the water supply and fire protection to businesses and residents in central and north Nanaimo.

“Ensuring our community, and hospital, has access to a reliable water supply is absolutely critical,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog in the release. “Investing in this important infrastructure project will bolster our resiliency and serve the community for generations to come.”
