One way to start the new year is to clear out the remnants of 2022, including the most recyclable of all Christmas decorations.

Christmas trees can be disposed of at Regional District of Nanaimo landfills for a drop-off fee. The regional landfill at 1105 Cedar Rd. in Nanaimo and the Church Road transfer station at 860 Church Rd. in Parksville are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, except on statutory holidays, and accept green waste for a minimum $8 fee or, for large quantities, a tipping fee of $55 per tonne.

For those who prefer supporting a local non-profit, the B.C. SPCA Nanaimo branch, Nanaimo Lions Club and Nanaimo Search and Rescue are holding Christmas tree chipping events Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The SPCA is holding a combined chipping and bottle drive event, with chipping done by Jeff’s Tree Services, by donation at the B.C. SPCA Nanaimo and District Community Animal Centre at 154 Westwood Rd. Cash donations for tree chipping are preferred and recyclable bottles and cans will be accepted, too. All money raised supports helping care for animals in the community and the centre is giving away, while supplies last, free pizza coupons to those who come early enough.

The Nanaimo Lions Club is hosting its 60th Christmas Tree Chip Up in the parking lot at Nanaimo North Town Centre. All chipping is by donation supporting Nanaimo Lions Club projects and programs.

Nanaimo Search and Rescue is holding its tree chipping event in the Country Club Centre parking lot.
