Cellphone leads police to Nanaimo assault suspect

NANAIMO – A 27-year-old male remains in jail after allegedly assaulting and robbing a 30-year-old woman in downtown Nanaimo.

A 27-year-old male remains in jail pending a court hearing after allegedly assaulting and robbing a 30-year-old woman in downtown Nanaimo.

Police were called at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday by a woman who found the victim on Dunsmuir Street bleeding and in distress.

The victim, known to police through Nanaimo’s sex trade, said her cellphone was stolen and officers called the number, convincing the suspect he was speaking with a friend of the victim.

They arranged a meeting and arrested him at 7 a.m. Wednesday on Victoria Crescent .

Wesley Allan Harker, of Saskatchewan, was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and possession of stolen property.

He remains in custody until a court appearance Tuesday (Aug. 7).

The victim received extensive cuts and lacerations to her head and was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She was released Wednesday.
