The Cedar Farmers Market is renowned in the area, and now the whole province knows about it.
Earlier this month, the Cedar Farmers Market won the Most Outstanding Community Impact award among large markets at the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets conference in New Westminster.
According to the association’s website, the awards recognize “outstanding farmers’ markets, vendors, partners, volunteers and municipalities that are exemplary in adding value to their communities and the farmers’ market sector.”
The Cedar Farmers Market, with 100 stalls and a stage, is held Sundays at Woodbank School from May to October.
“The last few years have brought changes and challenges, but also an incredible sense of connection. Thank you for voting for us, thank you for joining us, and thank you for shopping local,” the market posted on its Facebook page.
Also at the awards, Nanaimo’s Venesa Vallese was chosen Volunteer of the Year for her efforts helping the Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market with sales, customer service and general enquiries.
“It was clear right from the start that Venesa has always risen to any challenge and is willing to help in any way she can,” said Launie Elves, manager of Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market, in a press release.
The B.C. Association Farmers’ Markets is a non-profit organization that, according to the release, is passionate about local food and helping markets, farmers and small businesses grow so local food continues to thrive.
“Without the ongoing commitment of hundreds and hundreds of farmers’ market volunteers across B.C., many farmers’ markets simply would not exist. This award celebrates the value, dedication, and commitment of volunteers provincewide and is an opportunity to recognize their important role in bringing farmers’ markets to life in their local communities,” said Heather O’Hara, the association’s executive director, in the release.
