The City of Nanaimo is warning people to be aware of bears in the Westwood Lake area.
In a social media post, the city said a black bear and its cubs were seen on the “back side of Westwood Lake” the morning of Thursday, May 11. People should be cautious when using the park and trails, the city said.
According to B.C. Parks, those who come across a bear should never run away and should watch the bears’ movements before deciding a course of action. B.C. Parks advises leaving the area quietly, retracing one’s steps, and if spotted by the bear, speaking softly and backing away slowly. Those who encounter a bear that seems agitated or aggressive should back away while trying to avoid eye contact, and have their bear spray at the ready in case the bear charges. Anyone knocked down by a bear should roll onto their stomach and try to remain still while protecting their head. If forced to fight off a bear, focus on its eyes and nose, B.C. Parks said.
Bear sightings can be reported to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
