The Regional District of Nanaimo board is anticipated to discuss a request for reconsideration related to the Cassidy Inn Hotel on June 28. The board ordered the building demolished.

Despite the deadline imposed by the Regional District of Nanaimo, the Cassidy Inn Hotel remains standing.

The regional district ordered the historic, but dilapidated, building in Cassidy be demolished by June 8 because it was in disrepair, a dangerous site and there had been complaints from the public, but the owner has enlisted legal assistance and asked the board for reconsideration.

Correspondence from Cook Roberts LLP law firm to the regional district, dated June 7, said its client is addressing regional district board concerns, with landscaping and garbage and graffiti removal. Fencing has been erected and windows boarded up, the letter said.

The firm also said the regional district committed procedural errors, such as the district’s failure to properly notify the client of April 14 staff direction that the site was considered a nuisance property.

Tom Armet, regional district building and bylaw services manager, said the board has received the correspondence and estimates that the request for a reconsideration hearing will be on the June 28 regular meeting agenda.

The firm did not name the owner, but at a May 24 meeting, Manno Pawar appeared before the board and stated he was owner of the Cassidy Inn Hotel.
