Firefighters rushed to a report of an upside-down car south of Nanaimo, but it turned out that no one was inside.

North Cedar and Cranberry volunteer fire departments were called out Friday, Jan. 6, after passersby reported a car on its roof in the 1900 block of Akenhead Road in South Wellington.

Emergency crews arrived just before 9 a.m. and climbed down an embankment to search the interior of the car, but found no one inside and the engine cold, so it was assumed that the car went over the embankment on the straight section of the road and the driver left the vehicle.

Nanaimo RCMP attended the scene and is investigating how the car, which appeared to be an early 2000s GM, came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.
