A former Gabriola resident who was arrested by Myanmar immigration authorities was freed and returned to Thailand.

Ron Zakreski, 60, was arrested March 24 after he inadvertently crossed into Myanmar. Zakreski was visiting eastern Thailand in an area near the border between the two countries.

Zakreski's brother, Ken Zakreski, who lives on Gabriola, said his brother was released Friday and was back in the Mae Sot district of Thailand.

Ken Zakreski said he spoke with his brother who said he was in good health, had been treated well by Myanmar authorities and was happy to be back in Thailand.
