Burning bush draws firefighters

Nanaimo homeowner ignites hedge while doing yard cleanup.

The blaze was already under control when firefighters arrived to snuff out the last glowing embers in a hedge that caught fire next to a home in north Nanaimo Thursday.

Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said firefighters were called out shortly after 3:30 p.m. to the 5100 block of Kaitlyn's way where an embarrassed homeowner was soaking down the hedge with a garden hose after discharging a fire extinguisher to knock down the blaze.

"The homeowner was burning off some grass below the hedge and caught the hedge on fire," Mond said.
