Body found in Nanoose house fire

NANAIMO – Family told police homeowner was in the house prior to the fire.

A body was found in the ashes of an early-morning house fire in Nanoose Sunday.

Firefighters with Nanoose Volunteer Fire Department discovered the body in the remains of the house on Higginson Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. The blaze broke out around 4 a.m., completely destroying the residence.

Oceanside RCMP said family members confirmed that Beatrice Sharock, 85, lived alone in the house and had been home the evening prior to the fire.

The B.C. Coroners Service has not confirmed the identity of the victim.

Police said Wednesday the fire was not considered suspicious and that the investigation had been turned over to the coroners service.
