Firefighters and ambulance paramedics remove the driver from his van after a rear-end collision with a transport truck near the Townsite and East Wellington roads intersection Monday morning.

Roads covered in black ice made roads treacherous for Monday morning commuters in Nanaimo.

The icy conditions were caused by overnight rain followed by clearing skies and a sudden drop in temperature that froze rain and melting snow runoff on road surfaces and helped trigger accidents from south Nanaimo to Parksville, including four accidents, each involving multiple vehicles, that occurerd in Nanaimo within a 30-minute period and kept emergency crews hopping.
