Coun. Bill Bestwick announced Friday his intention to run for mayor of Nanaimo in November.

Nanaimo city Coun. Bill Bestwick has bowed out of the running for mayor.

Bestwick has announced he will no longer seek the mayoral seat because of an unexpected change in his “life’s pursuit.”

He says the opportunity isn’t a huge announcement but will require more flexibility than he’d have as mayor. A letter to his supporters called it a professional opportunity with an International company launching a new product in Canada.

The move comes a week after he declared himself ‘all in’ as a candidate in the upcoming election, Nov.15. and leaves Brunie Brunie as the only official challenger for the seat.

“It’s just been a roller coaster and this opportunity for another venture just came on the scene and [the] timing isn’t good but thank goodness it happened now and not 30 days from now,” he said, adding the opportunity has potential in the future and he wishes to leave it at that.

Bestwick will seek re-election to Nanaimo city council.
