Nanaimo Fire Rescue is reminding residents that backyard burning is banned except by permit.
The City of Nanaimo issued a press release this week reminding property owners planning backyard burns that they must familiarize themselves with the city’s bylaws.
There is no permit fee, but specific conditions must be met to obtain a permit. Residents can get a permit for one burn pile on lots at least 0.4 hectares or lots on Protection Island, as long as they burn during daylight hours on Fridays and Saturdays during April and November.
Only organic yard waste materials, such as garden refuse and pruning may be burned, and someone must be tending to the fire at all times until it is completely extinguished.
Fires cannot exceed 1.5 metres across in size and must be located at least three metres from any combustibles.
“We encourage you to review the burning regulations and obtain the proper permit to prevent unnecessarily tying up the fire department at un-permitted, non-emergency backyard fires,” said Tim Doyle, Nanaimo Fire Rescue chief, in the release.
